January 2005 Rides

January 8th
Strawberry River

Snowed out due to weather conditions.

January 22nd
Fairview South

I understand this was a great ride for a few people. The advanced group had about 14 sledders led by Kueffner's. Of course a few people couldn't follow them very well. They had one sledder get side tracked and follow another group. It took almost an hour before John Borget came wandering back to the group and Orma had a tough go with the trail. (if kueffner's were leading, I'm glad I didn't go!)

Ron and Bruce Honey led the beginner ride which consisted of 9 sleds and 14 people, ages ranging from 2 to 70 years old.  It was a beautiful spring day in the middle of winter.  We rode 30 miles from the parking lot at the top of fairview canyon to miller's flat and back.  No one got stuck (except Craig showing off and ending up in a ditch).  Amy also wanted to see how close she could get to a tree without touching it!  The kids were sliding down the hill on their snow pants and gained valuable experience on operating a snowmobile on various terrain.  For the record, this was the first beginner ride Ron has been on and he had just as much fun as he has on the advanced rides.

January 28th - 29th
Executive Ride (Ruby's Inn)

We had several of our members go on the Executive Ride. I understand Doug Page gave everyone a scare with his unique riding abilities.

Just wanted to thank Marsha for the great picks. A few of the pictures show Doug training others on how to use a blanket in the snow! And I was curious, who is the guy doing the snow dance? It looks like you had plenty of snow for the ride!

February 2005 Rides

February 5th
Strawberry south

About 10 riders showed up for both rides so Ron convinced Ken and I to tag along with the advanced riders. He mentioned he would take it easy but that we would have a great time. He did not disappoint. We did the loop over to Indian Creek, Clay canyon then to the Warming Hut for lunch and back around to Strawberry. Occasionally we rode the trail but not much. The snow was hard packed with about 6" - 8" of powder. We could have used a little more. We had on incident with a sled rolling a few times. (I will find who the person was. I know they ride with George & Orma a lot). Other than that one roll over not much else happened. We just had a lot of fun!

February 19th
Soapstone

Advanced ride.

February 26th
state ride (unofficial ride)

The State Ride has been canceled this year but an unofficial ride is scheduled for Strawberry South. Parking will be by the ranger station. A pot luck dinner is scheduled at 4:00 P.M. in the parking lot. For more information, contact Dave Madsen at (801) 963-3819 or davem800@comcast.net.

March 2005 Rides

March 5th
Noblett's - Combined Ride

How do you know when you have been on a great ride? When every muscle in your body aches the next day. This ride was one of those rides.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would find untracked powder but our two guides did just that. Those that did not come and ride with us missed one of the great days of the year. On this ride we had 10 riders; Joe Donnell (our guide); Laura Barns; Brandon (our guide) (Laura & Ron's grandson); Rob, Brian, & April (Brandon's friends); Gerry & Myrna; Alan Mayo; Dave Huntsman.

Joe took us up Mill Hollow and East of Tower Mountain to Scott's Bowl then South to Co-op Trail and West across to Strawberry River Trail then back to Tower Mountain. We then headed back to Noblett's. Brandon, his friends and Joe entertained us by jumping off cornice's and high marking. Joe showed us where an avalanche happened by Co-op Trail and Brandon showed us where the snowmobiler (Jason Thorpe) died last week.

We went boondocking through trees, went down oh shit hills (too many to remember), and tried to go up a few vertical hills. (oh to be young and crazy!) All in all, it was a day we will each not soon forget.

March 19th
Strawberry River - Advanced Ride

If you have been waiting for an aggressive ride, this is the one to go on. It is not for beginners or intermediates. This ride will test your skills and boondocking experience.  Come ready to ride by 9:20 A.M. Bring your beacons, shovels, probes, and a survival pack!
